What Your Poop Says About Your Health

Let’s be real: poop isn’t exactly dinner table conversation but maybe it should be. Because your stool is basically your gut’s way of leaving you a note about how it’s doing. And no, it’s not TMI- it’s science!

So let’s flush the awkwardness and dive into what your poop can reveal about your health, using a tool that doctors and your future self will thank you for: the Bristol Stool Chart.

What is the Bristol Stool Chart?

It’s a medical tool used to classify poop into seven different types based on shape and consistency. It’s basically the “periodic table” of poop but so much easier to learn.

You can read about it here as well!

It was developed in the UK and is now used everywhere, from GP clinics to hospital wards to… AI-powered gut health apps like ours!

So, Where Should You Be on the Bristol Stool Chart?

Let’s break it down. Here’s what each type means, and why it matters:

Type 1: The pebble poop

Translation: You’re constipated, friend.
Your stool is hanging out in your colon way too long and losing water, coming out as hard, separate lumps. It’s time for more fibre, hydration, and possibly a little movement (a walk goes a long way).

Type 2: The Lumpy Log

Still constipated, just not as extreme so now your stool is lumpy and sausage shaped. You’re close to balance, but still on the “dry” side.

Type 3: The cracked Sausage

This is almost ideal. The cracks mean it’s a bit dry but things are moving.

Type 4: The smooth operator

You’ve nailed it!! This is your sweet spot. This is what’s considered normal or “ideal” on the Bristol stool chart.
It means your digestion is on point, your gut is happy, and your poop has the right water-to-fibre ratio.

Type 5: Soft life

Still okay, but a little on the loose side. Could mean your gut is rushing things so your stool comes out as soft blobs. Common after caffeine, stress, or spicy food.

Type 6: The Liquid Express

This is when we start saying, “hmm- you might have mild diarrhoea”. It can be from something you ate or your gut reacting to stress.

The difference between Bristol Stool Types 5 vs 6 can be subtle, and even with careful observation, it’s not always easy to pinpoint. If you’re unsure, why not let our AI-powered Stool Tool app do the work for you? It’s designed to help you identify your stool type accurately and take the guesswork out of gut health.

Type 7: Poonami

This is full-on diarrhea. Your body is trying to flush something out—fast. Keep hydrated and see a doc if it doesn’t settle.

Which Bristol Stool Type Is Best?

Type 4 takes the crown. If your poop looks like a smooth sausage (yes, really), your gut is in a good place.

Type 3 is a close second. These are signs that you’re getting enough fibre, drinking water, and keeping your gut bugs happy.

When to See a Doctor?

While occasional changes in your stool type can be normal, certain patterns may signal underlying issues that warrant medical attention. You should consider seeing a doctor if you experience:

  • Types 1 or 2 (separate hard lumps or lumpy, sausage-like stool): This may suggest chronic constipation. Seek help if accompanied by bloating, abdominal pain, or bleeding.
  • Types 6 or 7 (fluffy or entirely liquid with no solid pieces): Persistent loose or watery stools may indicate infection, food intolerance, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). If ongoing for more than a few days, or if you notice blood, mucus, fever, or dehydration, consult a healthcare provider.
  • Any major or unexplained change in stool type that lasts more than 2 weeks.
Presence of blood, black/tarry stools, or pale/greasy stools: These can indicate gastrointestinal bleeding or problems with fat digestion and should be assessed promptly.
  • Accompanying symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, or a family history of bowel disease.

Remember, your stool is an important signal of your gut health. If something feels off or persists, trust your gut, literally, and seek medical advice.
